While it is known that early explorers visited the region that is now the bustling Seattle, the first settlers did not put down roots in this area until about 1851. With acres and acres of forestland and little farmable ground, Seattle did not immediately appeal to settlers who preferred Oregon’s rich farming areas. However, the enticing abundance of wood finally intrigued settlers enough to see what could happen in Seattle. The town started to boom and has powered through many obstacles (the worst of which an 1889 fire that burned 25 blocks of the city center) to become a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to the largest city in the Pacific Northwest and has made Seattle a very popular destination for Great Adventure Tours and their student and school trips.
